The UAE is only 1.5 hours behind India, which makes it by far the simplest place in the world to schedule Malayalam lessons from. Almost any time you want is a time I can teach.

The Gulf is different from the US, UK or Canada, and the pattern here is different too. In Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah, many Malayali children hear a great deal of Malayalam at home — and still cannot hold a proper conversation with grandparents in Kerala.
What usually happens is that the child’s Malayalam becomes a household dialect: enough for “where are my shoes” and “I am hungry,” but not enough for feelings, stories, or a long phone call with an ammachi who speaks no English. Meanwhile school runs entirely in English, and friendships run in English and Hindi.

Not all my Gulf students are Malayali.
