🎥 ‘Did you eat?’ is actually ‘I love you’ in Malayali. Here’s the code.
Welcome to Food Week - the most important week in any Malayalam course, because in Kerala love is measured in second helpings. Today: hunger, thirst, and the eating question you'll hear daily.
Today’s phrases
| Say it | Script | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Enikku vishakkunnu | എനിക്ക് വിശക്കുന്നു | I'm hungry |
| Enikku daahikkunnu | എനിക്ക് ദാഹിക്കുന്നു | I'm thirsty |
| Vellam venam | വെള്ളം വേണം | I need water |
| Choru kazhicho? | ചോറ് കഴിച്ചോ? | Did you eat? (lit. had rice?) |
| Kazhichu! | കഴിച്ചു! | I ate! |
| Kazhichilla | കഴിച്ചില്ല | Haven't eaten |
'Choru kazhicho?' is not really a question about rice. It's how Malayali mothers, grandmothers and friends say 'I love you'. The correct response to receiving this question is to feel warm inside. The correct answer is 'Kazhichu!' - even if you only had biscuits.
Mini dialogue — act it out
Amma: Mole, choru kazhicho?
Dear, did you eat?
You: Kazhichu, amme!
I ate, ma!
Amma: Enthu kazhichu?
What did you eat?
You: ...biscuit.
...biscuit.
Amma: AIYYO!
(sound of a mother's heart breaking)
Today’s task
