🎥 The two ways to say NO that textbooks never separate — locals judge instantly.
Today you learn to agree, refuse and accept like a local - and meet the two different ways Malayalam says 'no' (this one trips up every beginner, so we kill it on Day 2).
Today’s phrases
| Say it | Script | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Athe | അതെ | Yes (that's right) |
| Alla | അല്ല | No (that's not so - for facts) |
| Illa | ഇല്ല | No (there isn't / I don't have) |
| Sheri | ശരി | Okay / alright |
| Venam | വേണം | I want it |
| Venda | വേണ്ട | I don't want it |
Wrong fact? Alla. ('Are you Tamil?' - 'Alla!'). Something missing or refused? Illa. ('Got change?' - 'Illa'). If you mix them up, everyone will still understand you - but get it right and aunties will start asking where you learned Malayalam.
Mini dialogue — act it out
Shopkeeper: Chaaya veno?
Want tea?
You: Venam! ... sheri, randu.
Yes please! ...okay, two.
Shopkeeper: Sugar?
Sugar?
You: Venda!
No thanks!
Today’s task
🎯 Practice the pairs out loud: Athe/Alla, Venam/Venda. Then answer these in Malayalam: Do you want coffee? Are you a doctor? Is there rain today?
