🎥 The friendly haggle: a dance everyone in Kerala knows. Learn the steps.
Today: prices, sizes, colours - and Kerala's friendly version of bargaining, which is less war, more flirtation with numbers.
Today’s phrases
| Say it | Script | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Ithu ethra? | ഇത് എത്ര? | How much is this? |
| Valare kooduthal! | വളരെ കൂടുതൽ! | Too much! |
| Vila kurayumo? | വില കുറയുമോ? | Will the price come down? |
| Vere colour undo? | വേറെ കളർ ഉണ്ടോ? | Got another colour? |
| Ithu venam | ഇത് വേണം | I'll take this one |
| Kollaam! | കൊള്ളാം! | Nice! / that works! |
The script never changes: ask the price, look mildly wounded, say 'Vila kurayumo?', accept the second price. Everyone knows the dance; the joy is in dancing it. In fixed-price shops, skip the dance - but 'Kollaam!' at the mirror is always allowed.
