Malayalam for Spouses & Partners

By Dr. Reshmi R Nair, PhD · casual, everyday Malayalam — not textbook.

Married into a Malayali family? You don't need fluency to melt hearts - just a few warm, casual phrases said with a smile. Here are the exact spoken-Malayalam lines that work with your partner and their family, with audio so you sound natural.

Why a little Malayalam means so much

If you've married into a Malayali family, you already know: a few words in their language lands harder than any gift. You don't need fluency. You need a handful of warm, casual phrases said with a smile — and the willingness to try. This guide gives you exactly that.

The first phrases to learn

Start with the warm everyday ones: Sukhamaano? ("how are you?"), nandi ("thank you"), and the affectionate choru kazhicho? ("have you eaten?") — which in Kerala is really a way of saying "I care about you." Address elders warmly as chetta (older brother) and chechi (older sister).

Saying "I love you" — and other sweet things

Tell your partner njaan ninne snehikkunnu ("I love you"), or the warmer everyday enikku ninne ishtaanu. Use the term of endearment ente priye ("my love"), and when you miss them, njaan ninne orkkunnu.

Winning over the family

At the dinner table, nalla ruchi! ("delicious!") and the slang adipoli! ("awesome!") will make the cook beam. During Onam, wish everyone Onaashamsakal!. And when you don't follow the fast family chatter, just say ithiri pathukke parayaamo? ("can you speak a little slowly?") — they'll love that you're trying.

Hear it spoken, then practise

Reading these is one thing; sounding natural is another. Listen to the free family conversation and feelings & compliments audio episodes, then shadow each line aloud. Browse every phrase in the phrases hub, and when you're ready to really converse with the in-laws, a one-to-one lesson built around your family will get you there fastest.

Frequently asked questions

How can I learn Malayalam for my husband's or wife's family?

Start with a few warm casual phrases - sukhamaano? (how are you?), nandi (thank you), choru kazhicho? (have you eaten?) and a food compliment like nalla ruchi! Effort matters far more than perfection.

How do you say I love you to a Malayali partner?

Say njaan ninne snehikkunnu (I love you), or the warmer everyday enikku ninne ishtaanu. A sweet term of endearment is ente priye (my love).

What should I say at a Malayali family dinner?

Compliment the food with nalla ruchi! (delicious) or adipoli! (awesome), and if the talk is too fast say ithiri pathukke parayaamo? (can you speak slowly?).

Do I need to learn the Malayalam script to talk to family?

No - romanised Malayalam lets you speak right away. The script is optional and can come much later.
