Start from zero

How to start learning Malayalam when you know zero words

You do not need a perfect plan to begin. You need a small first path: hear Malayalam, learn useful words, make tiny sentences, and repeat them until your mouth gets used to the rhythm.

The zero-word starting plan

  1. Listen before speaking. Spend a few minutes hearing Malayalam sounds without trying to understand every word.
  2. Learn 20 survival words. Start with water, food, house, where, what, come, go, want, I, you and thank you.
  3. Use five sentence frames. I want, where is, I am going, please give, and please say again.
  4. Practise one real scene. Choose family call, restaurant, travel, home or greetings.
  5. Repeat daily. Ten minutes daily beats one long lesson once a week.

What not to do first

Do not memorise random lists

Words become useful when they are attached to sentences and situations.

Do not wait for perfect grammar

Conversation confidence grows through small usable replies.

Do not hide from pronunciation

Sound practice early prevents habits that are harder to fix later.
