Malayalam certification: what exists and how to prepare
An honest guide to the Malayalam certificates that actually exist, who each one suits, what they test, and how to prepare.
The honest answer first
Learners often ask me which Malayalam certificate to take. The truth is that the choice is small. Unlike French (DELF) or Japanese (JLPT), Malayalam has no widely recognised international proficiency exam for adult learners. SpeakMalayalam's one-to-one courses come with a certificate of completion signed by me, which records the level you finished but is not an official qualification. What does exist is a government programme for children of the Malayali diaspora, school and university qualifications, and informal level checks. Here is what each one is, who it suits, and how to prepare.

Malayalam Mission in more detail
Malayalam Mission is a Kerala government programme that teaches Malayalam to children of the diaspora through learning centres run with local Malayali associations in India and abroad, usually by trained volunteer teachers. The course has four stages, each named after a Kerala flower:

What Malayalam certificates actually test
Reading and writing the script

Comprehension
Reading short passages and answering questions, usually in standard written Malayalam rather than spoken forms.
Grammar and vocabulary

Speaking
Some programmes include recitation or oral tasks. Spoken practice also makes the written language far easier to remember.
How to prepare
- Months 1 to 2: learn to read the script fluently, a few letters a day.
- Months 2 to 4: read short, simple texts aloud daily; children's stories are ideal.
- Alongside: keep speaking every day so vocabulary sticks: the 50 conversation prompts are a good routine.
- Before the exam: practise writing answers by hand and have them checked.
