If you want your child to grow up with Malayalam abroad, the most powerful thing you can do costs nothing: talk to your baby in Malayalam from the first weeks. Here are thirty words parents in Kerala actually use with babies, the way they really say them.
Why baby talk matters so much
Babies learn the sounds of the languages they hear long before they speak. A child who hears warm, everyday Malayalam in the first years keeps those sounds for life, even if English later takes over at school. The words below are simple, repetitive and affectionate, which is exactly what babies learn from.

A lullaby to start with
The best-known Malayalam lullaby is Omanathinkal Kidavo, written by the poet Irayimman Thampi in the nineteenth century. Its first line, ഓമനത്തിങ്കൾ കിടാവോ (omanathinkal kidaavo), calls the baby a darling little moon. Many grandparents know the whole song; ask one to sing it on a video call and record it.
A simple plan for the first year
- 0 to 6 months: narrate the day in Malayalam: feeding, bathing, dressing. It doesn't matter that the baby can't answer.
- 6 to 12 months: name things and body parts, and play the same little games every day (kannu evide?, where's your eye?).
- Mixed families: one parent speaking Malayalam consistently is enough to start. The other parent can learn these thirty words too.

Frequently asked questions
Will speaking Malayalam to my baby delay their English?
Children raised with two languages may mix words at first, which is normal. They keep a strong majority language; the home language is a bonus, not a cost.
I am not fluent myself. Should I still try?
Yes. Warm, simple words said every day matter more than perfect grammar. Learning alongside your baby works well.
Which words should I start with?
Umma, vaava, maamam, paalu and chaachikko. They cover love, food and sleep, which is most of a baby's day.
