Growing up abroad, many Malayali children understand a little Malayalam but answer in English — and the bond with grandparents quietly shrinks. The good news: with playful, low-pressure practice, kids can rebuild that connection faster than you'd expect.
This is a parent's starter guide: why heritage language matters, how children actually learn to speak, and the first words to begin with today — all in easy Romanised Malayalam.
How children learn to speak Malayalam
Through play, not pressure. Songs, repetition, naming objects, and short bursts (5–10 minutes) beat long formal lessons. Listening comes first — lots of hearing before speaking is normal. And connection is the motivator: a weekly video call with അമ്മൂമ്മ (grandma) does more than any worksheet.
First words for little ones

| അമ്മ | Amma | Mother |
| അച്ഛൻ | Achan | Father |

| വാ | Vaa | Come |

| വേണ്ട | Venda | (I) don't want |

A simple daily routine that works
1. One "Malayalam moment" a day — name food at dinner, or count toys in Malayalam.
2. A weekly call with grandparents where the child says 2–3 phrases.
3. Songs and short videos in Malayalam for passive listening.
4. Praise effort, never correct harshly — keep it joyful so they want to keep going.
Patient, playful 1-to-1 lessons for kids
I teach children from age 5 with gentle, spoken-first sessions built around their level — so they can chat with family, not just memorise words.

What age can a child start?
Any age — toddlers absorb sounds through songs; from about 5 they can follow short playful lessons.
My child only replies in English — is that normal?
Very normal. Lots of listening plus short daily practice gradually builds the confidence to reply in Malayalam.
Do kids need the script?
Not at first — speaking and listening come first; the script can come later.
