Few things say "I love you" to a Malayali family like trying to speak their language. You don't need to be fluent — a handful of warm, well-pronounced phrases at the next family gathering will mean the world to your partner's parents and relatives.
This page gives you the exact phrases to start with, in easy Romanised Malayalam (no script needed), plus how to address elders respectfully. It's the same spoken-first approach I use with partners and spouses learning to talk with their in-laws.
The first phrases to learn
| Malayalam | Romanised | English |
|---|---|---|
| നമസ്കാരം | Namaskaram | Hello / greetings (respectful) |
| സുഖമാണോ? | Sukhamaano? | Are you well? / How are you? |
| എനിക്ക് സുഖമാണ് | Enikku sukhamaanu | I'm well |
| ഞാൻ മലയാളം പഠിക്കുന്നു | Njaan malayalam padikkunnu | I'm learning Malayalam |
| ഭക്ഷണം നല്ല രുചിയുണ്ട് | Bhakshanam nalla ruchiyundu | The food is very tasty |
| നന്ദി | Nandi | Thank you |
How to address elders
Malayalis are warm about this. Many partners affectionately call their in-laws അമ്മ (Amma) — mother — and അച്ഛൻ (Achan) — father — just as family would. Using these, with a smile, signals respect and closeness. When in doubt, follow your partner's lead on what their parents prefer to be called.
Three quick tips
1. Pronounce it, don't perfect it. Effort matters more than accuracy — relatives will warm up the moment you try.
2. Learn 5 phrases before the next visit. Greeting, "how are you", "I'm learning Malayalam", "the food is tasty", and "thank you" will carry an entire evening.
3. Practise out loud. Spoken Malayalam is a mouth-and-ear skill. Say each phrase aloud a few times so it comes out naturally.
