How to Say "Hello" in Malayalam

Casual, everyday Malayalam — not textbook. By Dr. Reshmi R Nair, PhD.

നമസ്കാരം
Namaskaram — Hello / greetings

▶ Hear it spoken by a native voice.

In short: The standard "hello" in Malayalam is നമസ്കാരം (namaskaram), used any time of day. In casual everyday speech, though, Malayalis often skip a formal hello and just open with സുഖമാണോ? (sukhamaano?) ("how are you?") or എന്താ വിശേഷം? (entha vishesham?) ("what's up?").

ഹായ്HaayHi (casual, with friends)
എന്താ വിശേഷം?Entha vishesham?What's up? (friendly opener)
സുഖമാണോ?Sukhamaano?How are you? (common opener)

When & how to use it

Use namaskaram when meeting someone politely or for the first time. With friends, haay or jumping straight to sukhamaano? feels more natural — Malayalam conversation often starts with a question rather than a fixed "hello."
