Grammar basics

Malayalam grammar basics without getting stuck

Beginners do not need to memorize every grammar label before speaking. Start with sentence patterns you can actually use, then attach grammar names later.

The order that works

1. Word order

Learn how simple Malayalam sentences place people, objects and actions. Use short examples before complex rules.

2. Useful verbs

Come, go, eat, drink, want, know and speak give beginners immediate conversation power.

3. Questions

What, where, who, when, why and how help learners turn vocabulary into real conversation.

Three starter patterns

I want... Use this with water, tea, help, tickets, food and directions.
Where is...? Use this with home, shop, bus stop, temple, station and room.
I am going... Use this with home, work, school, Kerala, office and class.

What to avoid

  • Do not begin by trying to translate long English sentences word for word.
  • Do not wait for perfect script knowledge before speaking simple sentences.
  • Do not study grammar lists without speaking practice and correction.
