How to Say "Friend" in Malayalam

Koottukaaran — Friend (male)

In short: A friend is കൂട്ടുകാരൻ (koottukaaran) (male) or കൂട്ടുകാരി (koottukaari) (female). The more formal word is സുഹൃത്ത് (suhruthu). "Best friend" is ഉറ്റ ചങ്ങാതി (utta changaathi) or just "best friend".

When & how to use it

In speech, friends often address each other with machaane (bro), eda/edi (hey), or first names - not "koottukaaran" directly.
