How to Say "Please" in Malayalam

Casual, everyday Malayalam — not textbook. By Dr. Reshmi R Nair, PhD.

ദയവായി
Dayavaayi — Please (formal)

In short: Malayalam has no everyday word for "please." Politeness comes from the verb ending -ആമോ? (-aamo?), "would you...?", e.g. തരാമോ? (tharaamo?) "would you give?". The word ദയവായി (dayavaayi) means "please" but sounds stiff in casual speech.

Variations & related phrases

MalayalamRomanisedEnglish
തരാമോ?Tharaamo?Would you give (it to me)?
സഹായിക്കാമോ?Sahaayikkaamo?Would you help?
ഒന്ന് ...Onnu ...(softener - 'just / kindly ...')
ദയവായിDayavaayiPlease (formal, rare)

When & how to use it

The trick: end your request with -aamo? and add onnu in front to soften it. Onnu vellam tharaamo? already means "could you please...?" — no separate word for "please" needed.
