In short: Malayalam has no everyday word for "please." Politeness comes from the verb ending -ആമോ? (-aamo?), "would you...?", e.g. തരാമോ? (tharaamo?) "would you give?". The word ദയവായി (dayavaayi) means "please" but sounds stiff in casual speech.
Variations & related phrases
| Malayalam | Romanised | English |
|---|---|---|
| തരാമോ? | Tharaamo? | Would you give (it to me)? |
| സഹായിക്കാമോ? | Sahaayikkaamo? | Would you help? |
| ഒന്ന് ... | Onnu ... | (softener - 'just / kindly ...') |
| ദയവായി | Dayavaayi | Please (formal, rare) |
When & how to use it
The trick: end your request with -aamo? and add onnu in front to soften it. Onnu vellam tharaamo? already means "could you please...?" — no separate word for "please" needed.
